Sidelined Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in Portland Friday and will miss one or two weeks. Roy has already been ruled out of Portland’s first-round series against the Phoenix Suns, which starts Sunday. But with the recovery timeline, the Blazers left open the possibility of his return should Portland advance.
Claimed Attorneys for Mike Leach claim in new court filings that a day after signing a new contract last year a top Texas Tech administrator and two members of its board of regents “secretly agreed” to fire the football coach before the school had to pay him an $800,000 bonus. Information in the documents was drawn from depositions and electronic communications between university officials that Leach’s attorneys have gathered in his lawsuit against the university.
Hired Appalachian State coach Buzz Peterson is on the move again, this time taking over the UNC Wilmington men’s basketball job and ending a second stint with the Mountaineers that lasted one season. Peterson is the Seahawks’ ninth coach, ending the school’s lengthy search to replace Benny Moss, who was reassigned within the athletic department in January.
•Holy Cross hired Milan Brown to coach its men’s basketball team. Holy Cross said it had signed Brown to a five-year contract, with an option for a sixth season. Brown coached Mount St. Mary’s for seven seasons. He replaces Sean Kearney, who was fired after one season.
Awarded Connecticut’s Maya Moore won the Honda Sports Award for basketball. Moore helped lead UConn, which has won an NCAA women’s record 78 straight games, to a second consecutive undefeated season and NCAA title. The Honda Award is given annually to the top female athlete in each of 12 NCAA sports.
Pleaded Former Cowboys and Colts offensive lineman Kurt Vollers has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to distribute marijuana. Vollers entered his plea in federal district court in Dallas. He will be sentenced July 23 and faces up to 40 years in prison and a $2 million fine.
Returning Michigan State’s Durrell Summers and Kalin Lucas will return to the Spartans for their senior basketball seasons and one last shot at a national championship. Spartans coach Tom Izzo said both are forgoing the NBA draft and will continue their educations.
