Keep Holocaust memory alive
This last Sabbath we observed Yam Hashoa and we remembered the Holocaust.
We held remembrance without hate high and we thanked God for blessing us with the survivors in our community.
As I read (April 10) about the observance at Spokane’s Temple Beth Shalom and the young people – Jew and Gentile alike – who participated in so many ways, I remembered one of our local survivors, a precious treasure of a lady who just celebrated her 92nd birthday.
I want to tell the children of Beth Shalom and all the children of this community that they alone have a special place in history and therefore a very special responsibility. It is very fitting that the theme of this year’s Yam Hashoa was combating Holocaust denial. For the children of this generation are the last children who will grow up with survivors in their midst and they – more than anyone – will have the most potential to assure that the next generation knows and keeps this history alive.
