Power’s mistake costly
Hunter-Reay wins second career race
Ryan Hunter-Reay took advantage of an early mistake by Will Power and was never really challenged, cruising to his second career Indy Racing League victory at the Grand Prix of Long Beach (Calif.) on Sunday.
Hunter-Reay started second and took the lead on the 18th lap when Power, the pole sitter, slowed and had to pull to the outside.
A part-time driver for Andretti Autosport, Hunter-Reay lost the lead after his two pit stops, but quickly regained it both times on the 11-turn, 1.968-mile temporary street course through downtown Long Beach. He led 64 of 85 laps.
Justin Wilson finished second, despite a collision with Alex Lloyd on Lap 53, Power ended up third and Scott Dixon was fourth.
NASCAR
Persistent wet weather forced the postponement of a Sprint Cup and Nationwide doubleheader until today at Fort Worth, Texas.
The Sprint Cup race was called about 75 minutes after its scheduled start because of persistent drizzle and the forecast for misty conditions until late in the evening. The race is rescheduled for 9 a.m. today.
Rain on Saturday wiped out the Nationwide race. It had been rescheduled for Sunday night after the Cup race and will now be run at approximately 2 this afternoon.
Formula One
World champion Jenson Button beat teammate Lewis Hamilton to give McLaren a 1-2 finish at Formula One’s Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai.
The McLarens finished ahead of Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg in third place and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in fourth.
NHRA
John Force raced to his third victory of the season and record 129th overall NHRA win, beating Tony Pendragon in the Summitracing.com Spring Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
In Top Fuel, Larry Dixon raced to his third victory of the season and 51st overall, beating Cory McClenathan.
Mike Edwards won the Pro Stock final over Greg Stanfield.
