Roundup: Durfey moves up after tie for first

Colbert tie-down roper Tyson Durfey made it two wins in a row by sharing first place at the Red Bluff, Calif., Round-Up last weekend.

Durfey, who won at Logandale, Nev., two weeks ago, roped and tied two calves in 17.5 seconds to tie eight-time world champion Fred Whitfield.

By winning more than $5,100 at Logandale and almost $3,800 at Red Bluff, Durfey has moved into seventh place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association standings with almost $31,000.

Chad Ferley led the Red Bluff saddle bronc riding with an 89 on Kool Toddy, a mare owned by the Big Bend Rodeo Co. of Ritzville. Ferley earned more than $5,000, the third rodeo in the last three years he won top dollar when drawing Kool Toddy.

Cheney bareback rider Ryan Gray, who leads the PRCA standings with $79,705, will have surgery on his right knee a week from today. Gray’s lead is almost $27,000.

College golf

Sage Suffecool shot a 12-over-par 156 on a windy day in Vallejo, Calif., to lead Gonzaga into third place after the first two rounds of the West Coast Conference Women’s Championship on Monday.

The junior is eight shots behind leader Danielle Cvitanov of San Francisco going into today’s final round.

Eight-time defending champion Pepperdine shot 600 for a 27-stroke lead. Gonzaga is at 646.

•Idaho senior Amanda Jacobs shot a 2-over-par 72 and is second by a shot after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Championship in Mesa, Ariz.

The Vandals are fourth in the tightly-bunched seven-team field at 24-over 308, four shots back of leader San Jose State.

Hawaii’s Erika Lundberg leads at 1-over 72.

•Redshirt junior Allison Travis of Washington State shot a 4-over-par 76, nine shots out of the lead, in the opening round of the Pac-10 Women’s Championships in Eugene, Ore.

The Cougars are tied for ninth with Oregon State after firing a 29-over 317.

Ten shots separate the top six schools. Arizona leads at 5-under 283.Washington is seventh at 296.

Joanne Lee of Cal has a one-stroke lead at 5-under 67. UW’s Sadena Parks is tied for fourth at 70.

•Jayme Carbon of Eastern Washington is at 7-over 79 after the first round of the Big Sky Conference Women’s Championships in Chandler, Ariz.

Northern Arizona teammates Stephanie Kim (3-under 69) and Megan Buck (70) are 1-2 and led the Lumberjacks to a one shot lead over Portland State, 294-295. EWU is eighth in the nine-team field at 324.

•Derek Cheney (79-74) and Kyle Huus (76-77) of Gonzaga matched 9-over 153s to figure in a four-way tie for 18th, 10 shots out of first after the first two rounds of the West Coast Conference Men’s Championships in Vallejo, Calif.

Josh Anderson of Pepperdine has a one shot lead at 1-under 143 and led the Waves to an 11-stroke lead at 584. GU is sixth at 623.

Track and field

Jeshua Anderson, the Washington State junior who won the men’s invitational 400m hurdles at the Mt. SAC Relays in a season-best and nation-leading time of 49.11 seconds, is the Pac-10 men’s track athlete of the week.

The defending NCAA and Pac-10 champion is undefeated in intermediate hurdles this season.

Prep baseball

Jake Pereira pitched a three-hitter without issuing a walk and Ryan Dunton drove in four runs to lead Coeur d’Alene to a 7-0 Inland Empire League win over visiting Post Falls.

In another IEL game, Scott Seibert struck out six as Lake City thumped visiting Lakeland 11-1 in five innings. Mitch Bevacqua and Ben Pharis both went 4 for 4 for the Timberwoles.

Prep softball

Casey Stangel pitched a three-hitter, striking out 12 with three walks, and hit a run-scoring double to lead Lake City to an 8-0 win over visiting Lakeland in an Inland Empire League makeup game. Kory Kritz drove in two runs and Becky Short scored two.
