Roundup: Harthun transfers to PSU

Former Washington State University basketball player Michael Harthun will transfer to Portland State, the Big Sky Conference school announced Tuesday.

Harthun, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 9.5 minutes and 1.7 points per game last season as a sophomore. A South Medford (Ore.) High grad, Harthun was a three-time all-state selection.

Harthun was one of three WSU scholarship players who announced his intention to transfer, along with point guard Xavier Thames and wing Anthony Brown. Neither have announced where they are headed, though Thames has talked with Miami and Saint Mary’s, among other schools.

Baseball

K.C. Serna started the scoring with a two-run double in the second inning and finished it with a two-run home run in the eighth as Oregon (24-12) thumped Gonzaga (13-23-1) 7-2 in nonconference play in Spokane.

Zack Thornton allowed one run on two hits in five innings to pick up the win.

•Kevin Walkenhauer homered and scored three times as Central Washington (10-28) upended Whitworth (9-25) 7-6 in the opener and completed the nonconference sweep with a 5-1 win the second game at Merkel Field in Spokane.

Women’s golf

For the second straight day, Washington State finished its round of the Pac-10 Championships in ninth place, posting a 330 to fall one stroke behind Oregon State at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Allison Travis leads the Cougars with a 15-over 159 in 35th place.

•Gonzaga struggled on the last day of the West Coast Conference Championships at Hiddenbrooke GC in Vallejo, Calif., shooting a final-round 335 to drop from third to fourth place with a final score of 981. Miki Ueoka was the top finisher for the Bulldogs with a score of 241 in ninth place.

Pepperdine claimed the team title, while the Waves’ Lisa McCloskey shot 225 to earn medalist honors.

•Jayme Barbon scored a 3-over 75 on the second day of the Big Sky Tournament to lead Eastern Washington, which stands in eighth place (652) with one day remaining at Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz.

Men’s golf

Junior Kyle Huus led Gonzaga with a final-round 77 to finish the WCC Championships with a score of 230, tied for 17th, and the Bulldogs closed the season in a tie for sixth place with Portland at Hiddenbrooke GC in Vallejo, Calif.

Gunner Wiebe of San Diego took medalist honors with a score of 216 and Pepperdine took the team title.
