College roundup: Idaho comes up shy

Idaho sophomore Kayla Mortellaro was named Western Athletic Conference women’s golfer of the year Wednesday, but she and her Vandals finished just shy of titles at the conference championship at Mesa, Ariz.

Mortellaro, the second-day leader at Longbow Golf Club, fired a final round of 7-over-par 78 to finish tied for third at 225 with teammate Amanda Jacobs, four shots behind Fresno State’s Hali Coppin.

San Jose State (918) won the team title by one shot over Hawaii and two shots over the Vandals.

Jacobs joined Mortellaro on the WAC first team. Idaho’s Teo Poplawski, who finished 16th at 234, made the second team.

The Vandals must await the NCAA selection committee’s regional choices.

•Washington State placed eighth at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships at the Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.

The Cougars completed three rounds at 965, including a final-round 318. Arizona (878) won the team title by three shots over UCLA.

Freshman Emma Betland led the Cougars, tying for 34th at 20-over 236. Also for WSU, Allison Travis (241) tied for 38th, Kristen Allard (244) tied for 41st, and Ali Thompson and Ellen Park tied for 43rd at 249.

Arizona State’s Carlota Ciganda and Juliana Murcia tied for medalist honors at 2-under 214. Ciganda defeated her teammate in a playoff to win back-to-back titles.

•Eastern Washington finished eighth among nine teams at the Big Sky Conference Championships at the Octotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz.

The Eagles finished three rounds at 986, 86 shots behind champion Portland State.

EWU individuals were bunched together, with Dana Stapleton (246) in 35th place, Jayme Carbon (249) tied for 37th, Kellie Holmstedt (250) in 39th, Morgan Lee (252) tied for 40th and Neddy Martinez (255) in 43rd. All but Holmstedt, a junior, are freshmen.

Northern Arizona’s Stephanie Kim topped the field with an even-par 216, four shots ahead of teammate Megan Buck.

Baseball

Oregon collected four home runs among its 25 hits during a 19-10 nonconference win over Gonzaga at Patterson Complex.

KC Serna, Danny Pulfer and Steven Packard all homered and had three RBIs for the No. 18 Ducks (25-12). Dylan Gavin, who replaced Serna, also homered.

Drew Heid, Andy Hunter and Ernesto Ortiz all had two hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (13-24-1), who lost both games of the series.

•Elliott Van Gaver and Corey Brundridge both struck out five while posting wins as NWAACC East Division-leading Columbia Basin (22-8, 11-3) swept CC Spokane 6-3, 7-4 at Pasco.

Marcelino Morales went 3 for 5 in the opener and Maxx Garrett homered in the second game for the Hawks.

Martin Aguirre of the Sasquatch (18-12, 6-8) struck out six in the opener. Cam Christian went 3 for 4 and Derek Carley homered in the second game for CCS.
