Head-on collision hospitalizes two

A 31-year-old Post Falls man was killed and two others injured Friday night in a head-on collision on Highway 43 in Hauser.

According to the Idaho State Police, Frank Q. Sargent was westbound in the eastbound lanes of the highway when his 1994 Geo Prizm collided with an eastbound pickup at the intersection with McGuire Road about 8:45 p.m.

The truck, driven by Leslie E. Hammond, 71, flipped onto its top, and Hammond and his passenger, Elaine M. Church, 77, had to be extricated, the ISP said.

Neither was wearing a seat belt, and both were transported to Kootenai Medical Center, where Hammond was in fair condition Saturday.

Church was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, a Kootenai spokeswoman said.

Both Church and Hammond are from Post Falls.

Sargent was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is under investigation.
