Clean toilets a priority
As Spokane County commissioners struggle to come up with $22,600 to provide clean restroom facilities in seven county parks, maybe they should consider another cost-cutting measure.
It seems terribly inefficient to pay county park staff for two hours each day to deal with complaints about dirty toilets. Any good manager could see that. Maybe the park staff should get out in the field and scrub toilets for those two hours.
If the park department traded 10 hours a week dealing with complaints for 10 hours cleaning the toilets, they could be cleaned four days a week instead of three. Facilities would be cleaner, and the complaints would be fewer.
Also, it doesn’t make sense to find sponsors for portable toilets at $5,400 per park. Why should civic groups cough up $27,000 (five parks at $5,400 each) when the county has a responsibility to its citizens to keep the park restrooms open and clean for the enjoyment of all?
