Earth Day stories missed
Some days I love this city. Today, upon reflection about our 40th anniversary Earth Day celebration, I feel deeply disappointed.
Great and wonderful things happened on April 17 as Spokane celebrated Earth Day 2010. Music playing and people dancing in the street; kids making bird houses; businesses and citizens working together to plant four new trees in the sidewalk; local organizations introducing themselves; people teaching us about our air, water and regional farming. The Fig Tree ran stories and their editor even attended the event. Where was the other local news media? Who, that couldn’t find a parking spot, would know how exciting and beautiful our celebration was?
If you haven’t visited Main between Browne and Division, the geographical heart of Spokane, you’re missing a breathtaking revitalization. Small, local businesses have breathed new life into that once rather scary and deserted block. The Earth Day celebration on April 17 provided our news people an opportunity to introduce this great new downtown gathering place. Sadly, that opportunity was ignored by most of them. It makes me wonder what the “hot topic” was in Spokane on April 17?
