Projects give students, faculty at SCC more room to learn

Two education projects at Spokane Community College will add more than 70,000 square feet of in one new building and 31,600 square feet of faculty and administrative offices in a remodeled adjacent building.

The larger project is the SCC Technical Education Building. Expected to cost about $24.1 million – for design, construction and installation of new equipment – it will become the central location for SCC’s technical support services.

It will also be the hive for various technical programs, including electrical maintenance, fluid power lab, machine shop and other areas.

Graham Construction & Management of Spokane is the general contractor. The building is expected to be ready in spring 2011. Architects are LSW Architects, PC of Vancouver, Wash.; and Integrus Architecture of Spokane.

The project directly west of the Technical Education Building is the renovation of Building 7, which for years has housed the college science programs.

Bouten Construction is managing the $12.2 million project, with De Neff Deeble Barton Associates of Spokane the architect.

Once finished this fall, the renovated building – known as Building 7 – will house the athletics department, medical tech department, classrooms and the campus Information Technology Support and Data Center.

Medical offices to rise in Liberty Lake

Liberty Lake Commons plans to break ground within 10 days on a two-story medical services building, with tenants expected to move in around the end of the year.

The Liberty Lake Health and Wellness Building will have 25,500 square feet of space, and all but about 7,000 square feet has been leased. The primary tenant will be Columbia Medical Associates, which will offer primary care and sports medicine. A diagnostic imaging center is planned in conjunction with Columbia.

Other tenants include U-District Physical Therapy and Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories, said Barry Baker, president of general contractor Baker Construction and Development Inc. of Spokane.

The building – the sixth in the Liberty Lake Commons complex – is expected to be finished late this fall, Baker said. It’s located between Interstate 90 and Country Vista Drive, and between The Home Depot and Safeway. The address is 1334 N. Whitman Lane.

The architecture at Liberty Lake Commons is in the Northwest craftsmen style, Baker said, using rock, timber and earth tones. The goal is to “try to build something that represents the lifestyle of Liberty Lake,” he said.

The move reflects continuing growth. Green Cupboards started in 2008 with former Gonzaga University student Josh Neblett helping launch the firm with Spokane investment manager Tom Simpson.

Downtown D.Lish now Cruisers Burgers

Dale Fruin, former manager of the downtown D.Lish’s Hamburgers shop in River Park Square, has taken over as owner. He’s renamed the business Cruisers Burgers & More.

The other Spokane D.Lish’s location on North Division Street is still owned by company founder Anne Marie Lish.

Fruin said the new name reflects plans to add more items, including a kids’ menu, to the food choices.

Cowles Co., which publishes The Spokesman-Review, owns and manages River Park Square.
