In brief: Robbery suspect shoots self after chase

Staff report

The suspect in a Tuesday night pharmacy robbery was hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered after a short police chase.

The man was driving a four-door Jeep when he was spotted by police shortly after the Rite Aid at 29th Avenue and Regal Street was robbed about 8:30 p.m., said Spokane Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer DeRuwe.

When police tried to stop his vehicle at 4th Avenue and Cowley Street, he attempted to flee. The two patrol cars used a “pit” maneuver, in which the police cars drove parallel to the Jeep and forced it to spin out, killing the engine, DeRuwe said.

The man then shot himself, she said. He was transported to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. His name and condition were not available.

Because Spokane Police were on the scene when the man shot himself, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office will take over the investigation, DeRuwe said.
