Defense attorneys vital

As someone who has worked as a prosecutor for 15 years, I take exception to Richard Lee’s recent letter (Aug. 1). As a prosecutor, I have worked and battled with many dedicated, talented and ethical defense attorneys. These attorneys work not only to represent their client’s interests, but to assure that law enforcement officers and prosecutors do their jobs properly and fairly.

Many of these attorneys have families, own homes and care about this community as much as I do. They, too, want their families to live in a safe community. History is rife with examples of defense attorneys who have gone on to serve in public office. Our system of justice is based on the ideal that everyone accused of a crime deserves a vigorous defense. Mr. Lee makes the mistake of confusing these professionals with the crimes of their clients.

The general public sometimes misunderstands the important role that the defense attorney plays within the criminal justice system, but as a member of the bar, Mr. Lee should know better.
