Coach: Larry Price Top hitters: Tony Salas (.469 average, 5 HR, 54 RBI), Ryan Humphrey (.437, 4 HR, 44 RBI) Top pitchers: Cody Hamlin (7-2, 3.59 ERA, 56 strikeouts, 18 walks), Joe Wewers (5-2, 5.83 ERA, 36 strikeouts, 20 walks) Noteworthy: Price is a 1982 Coeur d’Alene High grad. He played three years at University of Southern California and one year at Lewis-Clark State College. … His teams have won eight state titles in his 23 years as coach. They finished second in the 2008 regional, falling to the Twin City Titans of Richland in the title game.
Dimond Lynx (Anchorage)
Coach: John Reppel Top hitters: Colton Lauwers (.392, 24 RBI), Sagan Osborne (.389, 29 RBI) Top pitchers: Erik Scott (5-0, 1.24 ERA, 30 strikeouts, 22 walks), Lauwers (7-1, 1.67 ERA, 41 strikeouts, 22 walks) Noteworthy: The Lynx average more than 10 runs per game and have a team 3.84 ERA. They last went to regionals in 2002. They’ve won six state titles.
Missoula (Mont.) Mavericks
Coach: Brent Hathaway Top hitters: Brody Miller (.491, 16 HR, 122 RBI), Ben Roberts (.425, 16 HR) Top pitchers: Brent Daugherty (11 wins, 46 strikeouts), Steve DeYoung (10 wins, 1.90 ERA), Andrew Spoko (10 wins, 2.27 ERA, 64 strikeouts) Noteworthy: This is the fifth regional trip in Hathaway’s two decades of coaching, but first since 1998.
Kelso Pacific Tech
Coach: Grady Tweit Top hitters: Garrett McCoy (.474, 2 HR, 37 RBI), Nolan Enriquez (.383, 3 HR, 30 RBI) Top pitchers: Braydon Poole (6-0, 2.19 ERA, 28 strikeouts, 16 walks), Jake Look (6-1, 3.06 ERA, 25 strikeouts, 7 walks) Noteworthy: This is Kelso’s first trip to regionals in 12 years. “They surprised me at state,” Tweit said. “From where we started to where we are now, I didn’t think we’d qualify for state at the start of the season. It’s a credit to the kids.”
Wausau (Wis.) Bulldogs
Coach: Tom Magnuson Top hitters: Mike Parman (.428, 8 HR, 41 RBI), Mitch Howe (.419), Seth McMullen (11 HR, 42 RBI) Top pitchers: John Roberts (8 wins, 72 strikeouts), Austin Priebe (5 wins, 2.62 ERA) Noteworthy: This group won a state high school title in 2009, but finished third in state legion. They won state legion this year after finishing runner-up in high school season.
Roseburg (Ore.) Docs
Coach: Scott Shaver Top hitters: Vince Ampi (.450, 9 HR), Kyle Jaukkuri (.420. 4 HR) Top pitchers: Brandon Jackson (8-1, 2.00 ERA), Josh Graham (7-1, 3.10 ERA) Noteworthy: Roseburg upset favored Medford at state to earn regional berth. Medford finished second in 2010 World Series. Roseburg has won 11 state titles, but is making first trip to regionals in 24 years.
Cheyenne (Wyo.)
Coach: Tagg Lain Top hitters: Brandon Nimmo (.453, 15 HR), Jorden Mossey (.423), Colby Harrison (20 HR, 103 RBI) Top pitchers: Myles McVeigh (12 wins, 1.71 ERA, 126 strikeouts), Chris Nadon (12 wins, 2.08 ERA) Noteworthy: Cheyenne has represented Wyoming in nine of 10 regionals.
Spokane Blue Devils
Coach: Tony Byrne Top hitters: Tyler Peffer (.470, 7 HR), Taylor Hustad (.450) Top pitchers: Kasey Sargent (8-3, 3.10 ERA), Tyler Moore-Long (5-2, 3.30 ERA) Noteworthy: Blue Devils earned regional playing host berth by winning league title. They took two out of three games in the final week of regular season from Spokane Bandits, who went on to place second in state.
