They come to work

Sunday’s edition of The Spokesman (July 25) included two interesting angles on illegal immigration. One, the Washington Growers League can’t generate much interest in legal workers, and two, the usual gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands over illegal workers.

Here’s a thought – just a thought. Why do they come here? To work. It is against the law to hire illegal immigrants to work. When was the last time we heard of an employer being fined or punished for hiring illegal workers? One pundit has opined that if we would crack down on the employers, there would be a rush to the border – south.

I love the argument that they are taking jobs away from Americans. Well, it seems like there isn’t much interest in Americans holding many of those jobs. Another pundit said that the illegal immigrant is coming here with no education, no skills and doesn’t speak the language. If he can take your job, I think I’d keep quiet about it.

They bring crime and drug use to this country? Do some research. I think you’ll find that many of those border towns, the “entry” towns, are among the most crime-free areas of the country.
