Spirit Lake teen killed in crash

An 18-year-old Spirit Lake man died Thursday in a head-on collision.

Mathew Rocheleau, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was headed south on Highway 41 about 5:50 p.m. when he veered into oncoming traffic, according to Idaho State Police. Rocheleau collided with a Dodge Dakota driven by 40-year-old Franklin Gausnell.

Gausnell of Athol was taken to Kootenai County Medical Center with injuries, police said.

It’s unknown why Rocheleau drifted into oncoming traffic, police said. The crash remains under investigation.

Rocheleau was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
