Writers to host ‘story walk’

Tour of downtown features personal stories along way

There is an interesting little walking tour happening downtown Aug. 15. Nicki Sabalu and a group of friends have collected nine personal stories about downtown landmarks and places in a booklet.

The writers of the stories will gather on Aug. 15 at 3 p.m. at the Community Building, 35 W. Main Ave., and anyone who’s interested can join them on a walk from place to place.

“We will start at the Community Building, that’s a special spot for someone, and then move on to the Australian Sundial, which is a spot for someone else,” said Sabalu. At each of the nine locations the writer who picked that particular spot as something special will read their story out loud.

All story locations are within the central core of downtown – the last location is in the grassy median of Riverside Avenue, just west of Monroe Street.

“It’s the first time we are doing it and it’s sort of an experiment,” said Sabalu. “I had an idea about sharing stories about significant places, and the walking tour sort of sprung from that.”

Another walking story tour could happen in the future.

“We will see how this goes,” said Sabalu. “We have talked about starting an online archive of stories, and if writers submit enough stories we’ll gather them up and do another tour.”
