Sheriff’s deputy shoots man who fired at officers

Okanogan, Wash. – An Okanogan County sheriff’s deputy Saturday night shot a 61-year-old man who was firing at authorities responding to a report he ran his wife over with a tractor. James J. Landis was treated for a hip wound from the shooting in Havillah. His wife, whose leg was run over, was also treated. No officers were hurt. Sheriff Frank T. Rogers said Landis fired at a patrol car when deputies first arrived, but the officers pulled away and called for backup. Landis made his way to deputies and opened fire again with a pistol and a rifle, striking the patrol car, Rogers said. That’s when the deputy shot back.
