Bezdicek ties for medalist honors

Spokane’s Sierra Bezdicek tied for medalist honors with a one-over 73 at the American Junior Golf qualifier tournament at Wenatchee Golf and Country Club.

Bezdicek along with a handful of other Spokane area golfers will play in the AJGA tournament that begins a three-day run today.

Megan Haase (75) and Kaitlen Parsons (78) will join Bezdicek in the tourney.

In the boys division, Evan Dyar shot a 72, three shots behind the medalist, to qualify for today’s tourney. He joins Peter Gullickson and Robert McKee, who both had already qualified.

The qualifier consisted of 24 girls and 72 boys.

Titans third at state

The University Titans AA American Legion baseball team (34-11 overall) finished third at state at Anacortes.

The Titans, who went 3-2, defeated Tacoma Cobras, Lakeside Recovery of Newport and top-seeded Lewis County Merchants of Vancouver while losing to Burlington Sox 4-3 and 7-4. Olympic defeated Burlington 6-5 in the title game.

Titans sophomore pitcher Austin Sturgis was named first team All-State. Tyler Crawford (pitcher) and Taylor Keeton and Hayden Powell (infielders) along with Dan Moore (infield) of Mt. Spokane and Nate Spurbeck (outfield) of Mt. Spokane were named second team. Moore was also named honorable mention at pitcher along with teammate Riley Trotter (infield) and Titan Colin Young (pitcher/first baseman).

• The early registration deadline for the 11th annual Fall Development League put on by the Spokane RiverHawks is Aug. 19. The fee for the league will increase after the deadline.

Softball

Coeur d’Alene Crush led the showing of four area teams in the Amateur Softball Association 12-U A Western National fast pitch tournament in the inaugural event at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane last week.

The Crush, after going 1-1 in pool play, compiled a 3-2 record in elimination play to tie for ninth in the 34-team tournament dominated by Southern California teams.

Spokane Crash was 2-2 in the elimination rounds to tie for 17th while Spokane Dawgs and Northwest Wildfire of Coeur d’Alene both were 0-2 and tied for 25th. All three had 0-2 pool-play records.

Southern California Breakers from Vista, sweeping through the tournament unbeaten, defeated Firecrackers from Ontario, Calif., 6-3 in the championship game. Minors Gold 97 from Corona was third and USA Athletics from Redondo Beach fourth. Oregon Fever 97 from West Linn broke up the SoCal run, tying for fifth.

• Spokane Storm, after a 2-0 start in pool play, dropped its first two games and was eliminated early in the ASA 16-U A Western National in Clovis, Calif.

Lacrosse

Logan Rogers, who will be a senior at Gonzaga Prep this fall, was one of 57 recipients of the inaugural Burnaby (B.C.) Mountain Selects BMS Scholar Athlete Awards.

The award recognizes academic achievement and on-field excellence for each scholastic year. The participants compete in either the fall 2009 or summer 2010 BMS Elite Touring program and achieved an academic average of 80 percent or higher for the 2009-10 school year.

Fund raiser

Kellogg cross country coach Ben Castro is holding a modified Sprint Triathlon and Biathlon event Saturday in Kellogg as a fund raiser for his program that was initially cut last spring but reinstated.

Football rules clinic

A mandatory rules clinic for veteran and new high school football referees and coaches in North Idaho will be held tonight at Coeur d’Alene High School at 7. Registration begins at 6.
