Woman dies in motel fire on East Sprague

A woman was found dead in a smoke-filled motel room on East Sprague Avenue in Spokane this morning. Firefighters arrived at the Bel Air 7 Motel, 1303 E. Sprague Ave., about 9 a.m. and found the two-story brick and concrete building with light smoke coming from the front of the motel. Crews located the fire in a first-floor room on the east end of the building, where they found heavy smoke and extinguished a blaze, then found a woman dead on the floor, according to the Spokane Fire Department. Paramedics tried to revive the woman, who was transported to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and pronounced dead. The cause of the fire is under investigation, said Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer. None of the 28 crew members was injured. The woman’s name has not been released.
