In brief: School supplies sought for needy
Each fall, hundreds of students head to class without the necessary school supplies because their families can’t afford them.
The Salvation Army collects supplies to donate to low-income families every year, but right now they are short. Officials said they have supplies to help 1,000 children, but they are expecting to need supplies for an additional 1,500.
The Salvation Army is asking the community to donate or purchase supplies, such as backpacks, markers, glue, scissors and pencils. Collection barrels are located at area Rite Aid, Fred Meyer, ShopKo and Walgreens stores, PrimeSource Credit Union, United Health Service Credit Union and the Public Safety Building. All Coeur d’Alene Cenex and Zip Trip stores will give a free beverage for $1 donations, or people can donate online through makingspokanebetter.org.
