Some jellies, mostly a jam

At a recent Hauser Planning Commission meeting, the CDA Group proposed an open air market for 300 vendors that they want to build immediately north of Highway 53 and Pleasantview Road.

The Idaho Department of Transportation has approved the project, provided the developer builds a turn lane, but this seems woefully inadequate because vendors will camp in motor homes on the premises for three days each weekend and perhaps draw 1,000 cars or more every Saturday and Sunday.

This venture involves at least six times as many vendors as the Hayden Farmers Market at Highway 95 and Prairie Avenue that possesses traffic lights, turn signals, turn lanes and multiple through lanes in all directions. However, the Hauser market would involve a two-lane highway, two busy railroad tracks and a stop sign that controls northbound traffic on Pleasantview. It’s unreasonable to think that high volumes of traffic from three directions could be managed safely by a stop sign and the addition of a turn lane.

Before a decision is announced Monday, local residents should weigh in by writing to Hauser Planning Commission, City of Hauser, 11837 N. Hauser Lake Road, Hauser, ID 83854, or e-mail hausercityhall@roadrunner.com. Hauser City Hall (208) 777-9315.
