The Slice: For some, more bumps in the road

Remember that old Johnny Cash song, “One Piece at a Time”?

“The dirt roads out where I live are so washboarded that pretty soon we should find enough car parts along the side of the road to assemble a complete car,” wrote Anne Galbraith.

Quiz winners: Quite a few readers correctly identified former Spokane TV news anchor Maureen O’Boyle as the media personality who later graced the cover of People magazine in connection with her telling the story of being sexually assaulted in Georgia. I’m sending notebooks to Ed English, Greg Schuster and Nancy Bauchwitz.

Some were offended by this quiz.

Speaking of unhappy readers: Some of my correspondents were outraged by my suggestion Sunday that the mission of the Air Force’s Thunderbirds could be viewed with skepticism.

And a few readers angrily defended the practice of saying “Washington state” even in contexts where there is zero chance anyone would think you might be referring to the District of Columbia.

Slice list: Janet Bakos attended Central Junior High in Evergreen Park, Ill. Diane Stutzman went to Central Junior High in Melbourne, Fla. Joyce Thorne attended Central Junior High in Alexandria, Minn.

Slice answers: Kathy Morse said people who fail to retrieve their yard-sale signs posted at street corners should be ticketed for littering.

And several readers said the key difference between real bars and bars in beer commercials is that at real bars it takes quite a few drinks before everyone is great-looking.

The thought that counts: Maureen Gordon Shogan’s sister was about to be inducted into a workplace hall of fame. A friend called and wished her good luck with her “indictment.”

Holding a grudge: When Helen Kennett’s daughter was in kindergarten, the little girl proudly reported that she had moved beyond any bad feelings about a classroom slight. “I didn’t even hold a grub,” she told her mother.

Today’s Slice question: Do you have a good handshake?
