UI ranch worker killed by lightning
SALMON, Idaho – Lemhi County officials said a University of Idaho ranch employee was struck and killed by lightning during a strong thunderstorm in east central Idaho.
Sheriff Lynn Bowerman said 37-year-old Michael Haslett of Salmon was riding a horse and herding cattle at the university’s Hot Springs Ranch at about 4 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck and killed. The horse also died.
Two other people who were herding cows on the ranch about eight miles north of Salmon witnessed the lightning strike.
Bowerman said a wild weather system moved through the area Tuesday that included rain, hail and lightning strikes.
