MONDAY, AUG. 16, 2010

SAGLE, Idaho – A powerboat operating on Lake Pend Oreille slammed into a rock embankment, killing one and injuring three, the Bonner County Sheriff’s Department said.

Officials said 44-year-old Jay Smith died of injuries from the crash on Friday after the boat hit the embankment about 11:20 p.m. a few hundred yards south of the entrance to a marina at Sourdough Point.

The Bonner County Daily Bee reported that Smith lived in the Oden Bay area of the lake near Sandpoint.

Marine patrol Lt. Cary Kelly said the 18-foot powerboat was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Kelly said a man and woman remained hospitalized on Saturday, and another man was treated and released.

Their names have not been released.

Police said say it’s unclear who was operating the boat.
