Congress owns the debt

Liberals like letter writer Larry Whitesitt (Aug. 8) don’t like to be bothered with facts. Facts would confuse them and their message. Read the Constitution.

Reagan and the two Bush presidents did not run up the national debt. They did not have the power to do that, as Congress is the one and only branch that has the power to tax and spend. Presidents offer a budget but cannot spend anything.

Second: Tax cuts “paid” for themselves with vastly increased tax revenues. But Congress continued to spend and run up the debt.

The fault on the national debt belongs to Congress.
