Education notebook: Shadle plans festivities for reopening

Shadle Park High School students, along with the rest of the community, won’t have to wait until the first day of school to see their newly remodeled school.

The two-day grand reopening celebration begins Aug. 27 and includes self-guided tours and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Shadle graduate and former professional football player Mark Rypien will speak at 6 p.m., and at 7 p.m. attendees can enjoy a jazz concert in the auditorium featuring longtime “Tonight Show” drummer Ed Shaughnessy, along with the Bob Curnow Big Band.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for Spokane Public Schools students and those under age 18. They are currently on sale at Shadle and at the Spokane Public Schools administration building, 200 N. Bernard St. Tickets may also be purchased the night of the concert.

The celebration will continue Aug. 28 with a Corvette car show, a dedication ceremony for the Linda Sheridan Court, a bagpipe processional honoring veterans with Shadle graduate and Bronze Star recipient Tom Mielke, along with a reception to conclude the activities. Self-guided tours will continue throughout the day’s celebration.

LC, Ferris golf tourney set

Residents of the Lewis and Clark and Ferris High School communities still have the opportunity to register for the second annual South Hill Golf Classic.

The friendly golf tournament between rivals will take place at Manito Country Club on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Administrators assigned to schools

Spokane Public Schools has announced administrative changes throughout the district for the 2010-’11 academic year.

New administrators and other new positions include Brian Melody as Adams Elementary principal. Melody was previously the principal at Woodridge Elementary. Kimberly Stretch, previously the assistant principal at Sacajawea Middle School, is now the principal at Audubon Elementary.

Moving from the Central Valley School District, Heather Awbery is now Balboa Elementary’s new principal. Clint Price is the new principal at Garfield Elementary; he was previously the interim principal at Roosevelt Elementary. Mary Weber has moved to be principal at Grant Elementary from her previous position as principal at Adams Elementary.

Nancy Williams, previously assistant principal at Shaw Middle School, is now principal at Lincoln Heights Elementary. Mark Gorman is the new principal at Moran Prairie Elementary. He was the principal at Salk Middle School. Mike McGinnis is the new principal at Mullan Road Elementary, shifting from Lincoln Heights Elementary.

Matthew Henshaw will be the principal at Roosevelt Elementary, leaving behind his double duty as a principal assistant at Longfellow and Whitman elementaries. Nick Schuerman will be moving from his principal job in Arizona, into the principal post at Woodridge Elementary.

Salk Middle School’s new principal will be Carole Meyer, who was previously the principal at Rogers High School. Doug Robnett will move from his role as a principal assistant at Salk Middle School to Salk’s new assistant principal. Roed Freeland is Shaw Middle School’s new assistant principal. Freeland was previously a principal assistant at Shaw.

Lori Wyborney will be Rogers High School principal, stepping up from her previous assistant principal position at Rogers. Taking Wyborney’s place at Rogers is Mary Templeton, who was previously an administrative assistant at Lewis and Clark High School.

Leaving the Kent School District as assistant principal, Stefanie Heinen will be the Libby Center’s new director. Will Sarett, previously an associate principal in the Tahoma School District, will be an assistant director at the Skills Center.

Tammy Campbell, previously the executive director of teaching and learning, will be the executive director of curriculum. Karen Cloninger will be the executive director of teaching and learning. Cloninger was the principal at Garfield Elementary. Previously the vice chancellor of financial services for the Community Colleges of Spokane, Linda McDermott will be executive director of finance.

Clay Gehring, previously employed by D.A. Davidson in Montana, is executive director of technology services. Previously the principal at Audubon Elementary, Brent Perdue is now the director of certificated evaluation and support. Brett Dodd will be a special programs coordinator. He was an instructional coach at Garry Middle School.
