Clemens indicted for alleged lying

Baseball: Roger Clemens was vehement: “Let me be clear. I have never taken steroids or HGH,” he told a House committee in 2008 (pictured). Now, instead of the Hall of Fame, baseball’s seven-time Cy Young winner could go to prison after being indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday for allegedly lying to Congress.

The six-count indictment alleges that Clemens obstructed a congressional inquiry with 15 different statements made under oath, including denials that he had used steroids or human growth hormone.

Clemens was sticking to his story Thursday. He insisted he was telling the truth, again denying any wrong- doing on or off the field.

Welliver in title fight Saturday

Boxing: Another month, another title fight for Chauncy Welliver.

The Hillyard heavyweight (43-5-5) puts his World Boxing Organization Asia Pacific title on the line Saturday in Panmure, New Zealand – his fifth fight since November. A late switch in opponents will put him in the ring against Daniel Tai (18-8-2), an Auckland heavyweight with two previous losses to Welliver, by unanimous decision and disqualification.

“In the first fight, he threw more low blows and elbows than I have seen in all my other fights combined,” Welliver said. “In the second fight we just went to war for all 12 rounds. Saturday night I will only be satisfied with a KO.”

Welliver, who expects to weigh in at close to 240 pounds, is ranked No. 10 in the world by the WBO and 20th by the World Boxing Council.

He defended his WBC Continental Americas belt last month in St. Louis with a unanimous decision over Joell Godfrey.
