Whitworth Pirates will honor Depew, Gould, Kosin, Wang

Four former Whitworth students will be inducted on Sept. 25 as the 21st class of the Whitworth Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame. The four inductees include Bryan Depew, the leading men’s basketball scorer in Whitworth history; John Gould, the first Whitworth All-American in men’s soccer; Melanie Kosin, the first Whitworth All-American in women’s cross country; and Kevin Wang, a two-time national champion and former NCAA Division III record-holder in swimming.

Depew retired as the leading scorer in the history of Whitworth men’s basketball, finishing his career with 2,013 points. He led the team in scoring all four seasons, and became the first Pirate men’s player to earn first-team All-Northwest Conference honors four years in a row.

Gould was Whitworth’s first All-American in soccer. Only a two-year player at Whitworth after playing two years for the Community Colleges of Spokane, Gould still set Pirate records that still stand for career points (91), points in a season (54), goals in a season (19) and assists in a season (15).

Kosin was the first Pirate woman to become an NAIA cross country All-American. She earned that distinction as a freshman in 1989, finishing 18th at the NAIA Championships. As a sophomore, Kosin led the Whitworth women’s team to its first national championship meet, where the Pirates finished in 19th place. She finished 11th in the nation as a junior, still the highest individual finish at a national championship meet for a Whitworth woman. During her senior season, the women’s team jumped to an 11th-place finish at the NAIA championships.

Wang is the most dominant men’s swimmer in Whitworth history. He was a two-time national champion in the 400-yard individual medley, setting an NCAA Division III record in that event as a junior in 2003. Over the course of his career, Wang earned NCAA Division III All-America honors 10 times and was a Northwest Conference champion in 11 of his 12 career events. At the time of his Heritage Gallery induction in 2010, he still holds Northwest Conference records in the 500-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley, the 400-yard individual medley and the 800-yard relay. He led the Pirate men to three Northwest Conference titles during his career and was the NWC Men’s Outstanding Swimmer as a sophomore, junior and senior. In 2003 the Pirates finished seventh as a team at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships, the highest team finish in school history.

The class of 2010, along with all current Heritage Gallery members attending the induction, will be recognized at halftime of the Whitworth versus Lewis & Clark football game.

Reservations for the induction ceremony and breakfast can be made by calling 777-3224.

Administration

Mike Marlow has been hired as a senior associate athletic director at Washington State University, athletic director Bill Moos announced. Marlow held a similar post at the University of Oregon.

While Marlow is returning to his alma mater, this will not be his first association with Moos. The two have strong ties dating to 1991, when Moos hired Marlow at Montana, and then seven years later at Oregon.

At Oregon, Marlow oversaw the major gift donors, corporate sponsorship and giving program, luxury suites, special event revenue for all facilities and managed Oregon’s Athletic Ticket Office and priority seating, which provided the Ducks nearly $16 million in annual revenue. As part of the Duck Leadership Team, Marlow played a vital role as the department established revenue records for ticket sales and annual donations, and raised more than $130 million for new baseball and basketball facilities.

Idaho women’s tennis coach Tyler Neill has finalized his roster for the 2010-11 season with the addition of Lauren Simpson, a sophomore transfer from Troy University. Simpson played at the No. 2 position in both singles and doubles for Troy.

• The Whitworth University women’s tennis squad was selected as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team and nine members of the squad were recognized individually for academic success by the organization.

Nine Pirates qualified for the ITA Scholar Athlete list. They are: Rachel Burns , Siri Carlson , Brittany Fulton , Claire Hemming, Allison Marshall, Katharine Staudinger, Janelle Talbot, Annika Westre (Mead) and Megan Wingfield.

Track and field

Eastern Washington University has added several newcomers to its 2010-11 team. Athletes include junior national champion in the hammer throw, Olivia Midles of Olympia, and Italian triple jumper Morena Mannucci, whose personal records already exceed marks in the Eagles’ record book.

Midles broke several records at Capital High School in Olympia. Her best toss in the hammer was 175-10. Midles dominated the state meet in the hammer, winning in 2008 and 2010, breaking the meet record in 2010. She placed first at the USATF National Junior Track and Field Championships in 2007 and in 2010. Her best throw would already place her fifth on EWU’s all-time best outdoor list.

Coming from Rome, Mannucci’s best mark in the triple jump was 40-9, a leap that would earn her EWU’s school record in the event.

Former North Central High School distance star Alex Avila also joins the Eagles. While running for NC, Avila placed fourth in the 5,000 meters at the State 3A championships, where he helped his team clinch its fourth straight title. Avila placed third in the 800 meters at the State 3A championships his senior year, running a time of 1:54.08.

Former Coeur d’Alene High School sprinter Chelsea Lawhead, a transfer from Spokane CC, is another Eagles recruit. Lawhead finished fourth in the 400 meters at the NWAACC championships during both the 2009 and 2010 outdoor seasons, with her best time coming as a sophomore with a time of 57.88.

Other recruits include distance runners Angelica Rodriguez of Hermiston, Ore., Britt Henderson of Vancouver, Wash., and Monica Jaenicke of Auburn, Wash.; sprinter/hurdler Martha Sanford of Richland; jumper/multisports athlete Thomas Kassa of Anacortes, Wash.; sprinters Travis Stewart of West Richland, Michael Okoro of Lakewood, Wash., and Alex Flores of Poulsbo, Wash.; thrower David Cannon of Seattle; and jumper Andre Moore of Moses Lake, a transfer from University of Mary who was first in the triple jump in his conference championships.

George Mathews of Hayden Lake won the men’s 65-69 USA Track & Field Masters Northwest Region Ultra Weight Pentathlon Championship held at West Seattle Stadium on Aug. 21.
