After check of trees, part of park reopens

The day-use area of Lake Wenatchee State Park reopened Monday after a couple of falling trees prompted the emergency closure of the popular recreation area last week and canceled about 650 camping reservations.

Otherwise healthy-looking trees in one camping area were diagnosed with a root rot that leaves them susceptible to falling with no warning, Washington State Parks officials said.

Camping is expected to be phased in as areas are secured for safety starting on Thursday, when 48 previously reserved campsites are expected to be opened in time for the Labor Day weekend.

While work continues, the other 150 camping sites in the park will remain closed at least through Sept. 15, the end of the reservation camping season.

Lake Wenatchee State Park is 18 miles northwest of Leavenworth in Chelan County.

Areas of the park reopened Monday include the watercraft launch, swim beach, group picnic area, equestrian area and concessions.

Displaced campers with reservations will receive a full refund, officials said.
