In brief: Georgetown tops Missouri in overtime

College Basketball: Jason Clark hit three 3-pointers in overtime, lifting No. 16 Georgetown (7-0) to a bruising 111-102 victory Tuesday night at Kansas City, Mo., over No. 9 Missouri (5-1), which erased an 18-point halftime deficit but faltered at the free-throw line in the final seconds of regulation.

After Michael Dixon hit 1 of 2 foul shots with 14.1 seconds left to give Missouri a 94-91 advantage, Chris Wright’s 3-pointer tied the matchup of unbeaten teams.

Missouri trailed throughout until Marcus Denmon canned a 3-pointer for a 77-75 lead that had the capacity crowd at the Sprint Center roaring.

• No. 7 Connecticut avoids upset: Kemba Walker scored 30 points and No. 7 Connecticut (6-0) returned from its triumphant trip to Hawaii with a harder-than-expected 62-55 victory over New Hampshire (4-2) in Storrs, Conn.

Shabazz Napier added 11 points for Connecticut which was not ranked before beating Michigan State and Kentucky last week in the Maui Invitational.

The Huskies trailed the Wildcats 24-23 at halftime, and didn’t take the lead for good until 6 minutes into the second half, in what was a close game throughout.

Conley, Grizzlies keep Lakers skidding

NBA: Mike Conley scored 10 of his season-high 28 points in the fourth quarter, and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Los Angeles Lakers 98-96 in Memphis, Tenn., sending the defending champs to their third straight loss.

Kobe Bryant finished with a game-high 29 points but was 9 of 25 from the floor, including 1 of 6 outside the arc. Pau Gasol had 15 points and 14 rebounds.

• Brand, 76ers top Blazers: Elton Brand scored 18 points while Jrue Holiday and Andres Nocioni added 11 each to help the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Portland Trail Blazers 88-79 in Philadelphia.

The 76ers trailed 72-70 midway through the fourth, before going on a 15-4 run that put the game away.

Bobcats’ Jackson suspended: The NBA suspended Charlotte Bobcats top scorer Stephen Jackson one game for verbally abusing an official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his ejection from Saturday’s loss to Milwaukee.

• West goes under knife: Boston guard Delonte West is recovering from surgery to repair his broken right wrist.

The Celtics said there is no timetable for his return.

Gagne returns to lift Lightning in overtime

NHL: Simon Gagne made an impressive return to the Tampa Bay Lightning lineup, scoring 1:15 into overtime for a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto.

The star forward also provided a screen when Martin St. Louis tied the game with just 8.7 seconds left in regulation.

Gagne had missed 18 games with a neck injury.

• Sabres not ruling out sale: In failing to rule out the possibility of the Buffalo Sabres being sold, minority owner Larry Quinn declined to discuss a report that a Pennsylvania billionaire is interested in purchasing the franchise.

Quinn would only call Terry Pegula “a great guy,” noting the two first met when Quinn previously worked for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Rogers to meet with Mississippi officials

College football: Former Mississippi State player Kenny Rogers is scheduled to meet with officials from the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office Dec. 9 to discuss the recruitment of Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.

Rogers’ attorney, Doug Zeit, said his client will meet with officials from the secretary’s office and has been interviewed by the NCAA.

• Bowl invitations begin: Texas A&M has accepted an invitation to play in the Cotton Bowl. The 19th-ranked Aggies will learn Sunday which team from the Southeastern Conference they will play.

• Army accepted an invitation to the Armed Forces Bowl in Dallas. The Black Knights (6-5) will play a C-USA team Dec. 30 at SMU’s Ford Stadium.

• The University of Southern Mississippi accepted an invitation to play in the third annual Beef ’O’ Brady’s Bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Dec. 21. The Golden Eagles will face an opponent from the Big East Conference at Tropicana Field.

Giants agree to deal with shortstop Tejada

Baseball: A person familiar with the deal says the World Series champion San Francisco Giants agreed with free-agent shortstop Miguel Tejada on terms of a one-year contract.

The deal is pending a physical and a formal announcement could come later this week.

Tejada would take over a spot filled previously by Juan Uribe, who finalized a $21 million, three-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and World Series Most Valuable Player Edgar Renteria, who is a free agent.

• Dodgers trade Theriot: The Los Angeles Dodgers traded infielder Ryan Theriot to the St. Louis Cardinals for pitcher Blake Hawksworth.
