Area roundup: UW opens volleyball tourney with victory

Becky Perry had 10 kills and Washington hit .321 to sweep Michigan 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 to open the NCAA Division I national volleyball tournament at Seattle on Thursday.

Jenna Orlandini added 16 digs and Jenna Hagglund had 28 assists for the Huskies (22-8). Lexi Erwin led the Wolverines (23-10) with 13 kills.

Washington will meet Hawaii (29-2) tonight in the second round.

• Deddiy Alaimaleata had 18 kills as Lewis-Clark State (30-2) advanced out of pool play at the NAIA national tournament with a 21-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-23, 15-9 win over Northwestern (Iowa) College at Sioux City, Iowa.

Nicole Graybeal (North Central High) added 12 kills and Kelli Tikker (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls) had 11 kills and 14 digs for LCSC.

LCSC will meet Azusa Pacific this morning as the 12-team, single-elimination portion of the tourney begins.

Girls basketball

Kyeli Parker and Caelyn Orlandi combined for 29 points to lead Coeur d’Alene (3-0) to a 47-46 win over Southridge (Ore.) at the Nike Northwest Invitational at Beaverton, Ore. The Vikings will play Clackamas (Ore.) in tonight’s semifinal.

• Hallie Gennett hit four 3-pointers on the way to 15 points to guide University (1-0) to a 53-42 nonleague win at Post Falls. Brooke Litalien led the Trojans (2-2) with 11 points. … In other nonleaguers, Ashley Knight scored a game-high 13 points and host Colville (1-0) scored 23 points from the free-throw line during a 56-28 win over visiting Priest River (0-2). … Cassie Thompson’s 22 points carried host Timberlake (3-1) to a 40-32 win over Lakeland at Spirit Lake. Neena Buchmann led the Hawks (2-3) with 11 points. … Annie Couch scored 17 points and combined with Annemarie Cain and Jessika Reiber for 30 rebounds as host Selkirk (1-1) posted a 58-51 win over Kettle Falls (0-1) at Ione. … Kana Shanley’s 17 points led North Idaho Christian to a 53-39 win at St. Michael’s. Becky and Katie Raynor scored 11 apiece for the Warriors (0-1). … Inchelium’s game at Northport was postponed.

Boys basketball

Zach Lehman scored 17 points, hitting 9 of 13 field goals, and St. Maries (2-0) shot 34 of 59 from the field during an 80-26 nonleague win over visiting Orofino. … In other nonleaguers, Kasey Nagor scored 21 points and visiting Kettle Falls (1-0) held on for a 52-49 win at Ione over Selkirk (0-2), which had three players foul out and finished the game with four players. Selkirk’s shot to tie the game went in and out near the end. Hunter Enyeart had 17 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for Selkirk, and Nick Gardner added 20 rebounds. … Gabe Durazo scored 26 points, hitting 8 for 8 from the line, as St. Michael’s (1-1) held on for a 49-46 win over visiting North Idaho Christian. … Sam Druffel scored 21 points to lift Genesee (1-0) to a 48-37 win over visiting Colton. Dustin Patchen led Colton (0-1) with 13 points. … Inchelium’s game at Northport was postponed.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock added defensive linemen Angelo Craig and Torrey Davis to their roster.

Craig (6-foot-5, 245 pounds) played for the Cincinnati Bearcats before the Cincinnati Bengals selected him in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft. He played for the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League last year.

Davis (6-3, 310) finished his collegiate career in 2009 at Jacksonville State.
