Eastern, Winford feast off Deacons

Sophomore guard hits 10 3-pointers

The chalupas were bagged before half, a win was never in doubt and the only thing that remained close to suspenseful was whether or not Eastern Washington University’s Kevin Winford would set a school record for points scored in a game.

The Eagles battered New Hope Christian College 112-41 Saturday night in nonconference men’s basketball at Reese Court.

The Eagles set three team records and Winford set one. The sophomore guard came up short of the points record and finished with 39.

Detroit Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey owns the record with 45. Winford registered a school record with 10 3-pointers made.

“Lately I’ve been feeling really good,” Winford said.

For a brief spell, Winford said he was feeling guilty about shooting. He shot 14 for 27 from the floor and 10 for 23 from behind the 3-point line. He still led the team in assists with seven.

EWU coach Kirk Earlywine emphasized the point after the game.

“I’m really happy with how we shared the ball tonight,” Earlywine said.

Earlywine credited his team for not getting caught up in individual stats and straying from the offense.

While there’s no glory to gain by beating up on an overmatched opponent, after getting thumped by Gonzaga in Spokane earlier in the week by the score of 86-57, it must have felt somewhat cathartic for the Eagles to release some pent-up aggression. New Hope plays in the Division II National Christian College Association.

Earlywine had a different perspective on that.

“When we looked back at the video (of the Gonzaga game), we saw that we did not play bad,” Earlywine said.

They played outstanding against the previously undefeated Deacons.

If the Eagles score at least nine 3-pointers in a home contest, the home fans can take their ticket stubs to a nearby Taco Bell for a chalupa.

In the first half alone Winford singlehandedly almost sent the home folks to the fast-food restaurant with eight 3s.

Eastern set school records by making 18 3-pointers, attempting 43 3-pointers and total field goals made at 45.

The Eagles play at San Jose State on Dec. 12.
