In brief: ‘Taffeta Christmas’ at Lake City

COEUR D’ALENE – “A Taffeta Christmas” is now playing at the Lake City Playhouse, 1320 E. Garden Ave., through Dec. 19. The holiday production is performed Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 2 p.m.

Adult tickets are $19; veterans and students age 13 and older are $17; seniors 60 and older are $15; and ages 12 and younger are $9.

“A Taffeta Christmas” will also be performed at the Jacklin Arts and Cultural Center, 405 N. William St., Post Falls, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Gift fair, charity raffle Saturday

COEUR D’ALENE – Pilgrim’s Natural Foods Market, 1316 N. Fourth St., will have a holiday gift fair on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will include fair trade, gourmet and unique gifts. Pilgrim’s will feature local artists, live music, holiday food, wine tasting and a variety of vendors.

Pilgrim’s will also have a holiday charity raffle to benefit Coeur d’Alene’s Fresh Start Inc. Tickets for the raffle are on sale through Dec. 19 and the drawing will be held on Dec. 20.

Fresh Start Inc. is a drop-in center and soup kitchen in downtown Coeur d’Alene for the homeless, near-homeless and mentally ill.

Raffle prizes include a $250 gift card for Pilgrim’s Market; a $25 gift certificate to the Garnet Cafe; a $25 gift certificate to Syringa; a $50 gift certificate to Angelo’s Ristorante; and a $100 package for Lett’s Downtown Car Wash.

Weekend winter events planned

SANDPOINT – Idaho Conservation League and Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness will host a winter welcoming weekend on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, participants are invited to take part in a film fest at the Panida Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the movies begin at 7.

The shows are an assortment of winter backcountry adventure films. Tickets are $8 an may be purchased at Eichardt’s, Outdoor Experience, Monarch Mountain Coffee, Sandpoint Sports or at the door. Participants will also have an opportunity to win prizes including a Schweitzer season pass and gear from Outdoor Experience, ROW Adventures, Mountain Gear, Patagonia and CLIF Bar.

Workshops on Saturday will be at Sandpoint Community Hall from 9 a.m. to noon. They will teach basic skills to make winter safer and while keeping it fun, and will cover topics such as avalanche dynamics, terrain, weather and snowpack, route selection and decision-making in the winter backcountry, human factors such as group dynamics and avalanche safety equipment.

Peggy Cuvala honored

ST. MARIES – Peggy Cuvala, a nurse practitioner in Panhandle Health District’s St. Maries office, recently received a Woman of Distinction award in the health category from Soroptomist International.

Cuvala is an advocate of women’s health. Her position as a nurse practitioner enables her to promote healthy lifestyles, work to prevent disease, educate patients about health and counsel them. She joined the health district 26 years ago, working as a home health nurse, public health nurse, school nurse and nurse practitioner. She serves as the chairman of the Benewah Community Hospital board and has served on the board for 11 years. She also volunteers her skills at the St. Maries Volunteer Community Clinic, which provides medical services for people with no access to health care.
