Prep roundup: Wiese hits 3; Newport wins

Courtney Wiese banked in a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left to lift Newport to a 38-37 nonleague girls basketball victory over visiting Timberlake on Monday night.

The Tigers (3-3) had grabbed a two-point lead with 13.6 seconds left when Cassie Thompson capped a 14-point night with two free throws.

Taylor Lewis of Newport (3-0) had 16 points and nine steals.

Boys basketball

Nonleague: Keith Coulson’s 3-pointer broke a 53-53 tie and ignited a 9-3 spurt for Newport (2-1) in the final 2 minutes that produced a 62-56 win over visiting Timberlake (0-3). Jake Wiley had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies. Brian Cronnelly had 17 points and 10 boards and J.D. Page 16 points for Timberlake. … Cole Fuhrman dropped in five 3-pointers in a 23-point game that led Sandpoint (2-0) to a 56-37 win at home against Bonners Ferry (0-1). Brandon Hawkins had a game-high nine rebounds for Sandpoint.
