Area roundup: Whitworth men’s team ranked seventh

After opening Northwest Conference play with a pair of road wins, the Whitworth men’s basketball team jumped from 10th to seventh in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, released Tuesday.

Whitworth swept Lewis & Clark and Linfield over the weekend to move to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in NWC play. The Pirates host UC Santa Cruz on Friday and Whittier on Sunday (both 6 p.m.).

Swimming

Whitworth swept the Northwest Conference men’s and women’s athlete of the week awards. Rory Buck earned men’s honors by winning both breaststroke events at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, earning automatic NCAA qualifying marks in both events.

The Pirates’ Abby Pavelko won the women’s award by taking first in the 1,650-meter freestyle at the Husky Invite.

Football

The Spokane Shock announced the signing of former LSU defensive tackle Charles Alexander for the 2011 roster. Alexander was signed out of college by the Philadelphia Eagles before being released prior to the regular season.

In his career at LSU, Alexander recorded 89 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

“From his days at LSU, Charles Alexander has a pedigree of winning championships,” Shock coach Rob Keefe said.
