DVD releases: A dazzling, but dizzy, noir

“Inception”: Christopher Nolan’s epically silly, overwrought noir stars Leonardo DiCaprio as an international dream thief who enters people’s subconsciouses and messes with their minds. The dazzling visuals, inspired by Escher and Magritte, can’t hide the self-seriousness of it all, and the Freud for Dummies dialogue doesn’t help, either. “Shrek Forever After”: The third sequel in the behemoth DreamWorks Animation franchise opts for an “alternate reality” scenario that undoes most of the previous films, and introduces a mad Rumpelstiltskin and a band of witches into the proceedings. Medi-ogre at best. (1:33; PG for rude humor and language) • •   1/2

“Restrepo”: Acclaimed documentary follows a year with one platoon in the deadliest valley in Afghanistan. (1:36; R for language including descriptions of violence)
