Area roundup: CV Bears hold off Mt. Spokane in wrestling

Jarod Ames (119) and Colton Orrino (125) capped the night with pins as Central Valley (2-0) held off visiting Mt. Spokane 41-30 during Thursday’s Greater Spokane League wrestling match.

The Bears broke to a 17-0 lead with three wins, including Brenton Beard’s 19-2 technical fall at 140. The Wildcats (0-1) battled back, including a 6-2 win at 160 by Austin Pea, a state qualifier last year.

Also in the GSL, North Central (1-1) bolted to a 20-0 lead, bolstered by Jacob Ecklund’s 16-12 win at 171 and Anthony Whitmarsh’s pin at 215, on the way to a 57-15 win at Lewis and Clark. Freshman Brooklin Sims had a pin at 119 for the Tigers (1-1). … Isaac Cey (140) defeated Aryton Nelson 6-4 with a takedown in overtime to help Mead (1-1) to a 72-3 win at Gonzaga Prep. Casey Hornbeck of the Bullpups (0-2) beat Matt Clark 5-2 in the final seconds at 160. … Dustin Johnson (215) defeated Dylan Lemery 3-1 in a match of two state placers as University (2-0) overcame an 18-9 deficit for a 39-27 win at Shadle Park (0-1). Shadle had momentum by winning four of five early matches, including a pin at 140 by two-time state placer Darren Bunke. The Titans won six of the last eight matches, four with pins.

• Spenser Rassier (171) rallied from a 10-3 deficit to pin Shawn Field with 17 seconds left to start Cheney toward a 60-18 win over visiting Pullman in a Great Northern League opener.

Boys basketball

Kwinn Hanson and Cole Ramey scored 16 of their combined 51 points during the second quarter to help Northwest Christian (2-0) pull away for an 88-50 nonleague win at Chewelah (2-2). … In another nonleaguer, Tyler Morgan had 16 points and nine rebounds and Eric Fields hit a big 3-pointer in the final minute to lead Kellogg (3-2) to a 52-47 win over host Lakeland (0-2) at Rathdrum. Ryan Beggerly added four assists for the Wildcats, who trailed by two points late after leading by 14 points at halftime.

Girls basketball

Paige Kelly scored 10 of her 12 points in the second quarter to lift Coeur d’Alene Charter (5-2) to a 34-19 win over host Kootenai (0-4) at Harrison. … Shannon Miller scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half and finished 8 of 16 from the floor to guide host Lakeside (5-1) to a 54-13 win over North Idaho Christian at Plummer. … Danne Dami’s 14 points led Northwest Christian (1-1) to a 41-30 win at Chewelah (1-3).

Gymnastics

Despite having top gymnast Kadie Pratt limited to one event (uneven bars) because of injury, Mead used its depth to win a five-way GSL meet at Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls). The Panthers scored 157.65 points to easily top second-place Shadle Park (148.55). Mt. Spokane’s Courtney Bray won the bars (9.l) on the way to the all-around title (35.95). Shadle’s Alana Norman won the balance beam (9.25) and placed second in the all-around at 35.75. Anandae Egland of the host Eagles won the floor exercise and vault.
