The Spokane Chiefs made a move to shore up their soon-to-be-thin defensive corps by picking up 18-year-old Davis Vandane.
The former Saskatoon Blade joins the team in Vancouver tonight, the last game before captain Jared Cowen leaves for Team Canada’s selection camp in Toronto for the World Junior Tournament. Reid Gow will play for Team West in the World Hockey Challenge after the Christmas break.
Vandane, 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, played in 12 games for Saskatoon over the past two seasons, including eight this season. The Chiefs put him on their protected list in November. He played for the Yorkton Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League the past three seasons.
The Chiefs are home Saturday against Kamloops. They play four games next week, including home games Wednesday and Saturday, before a nine-day break.
