Awarded Auburn quarterback Cam Newton won the Maxwell Award presented annually to the nation’s best all-around college football player. Newton was also awarded the Davey O’Brien Award presented to the nation’s best quarterback. Thursday’s ceremony in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., also gave recognition to: Oregon’s LaMichael James with the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s best running back; Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon with the Biletnikoff Award as college football’s best receiver; D.J. Williams of Arkansas with the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end and the Disney’s Wide World of Sports Spirit Award; Wisconsin offensive tackle Gabe Carimi with the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best interior lineman; LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson with the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation’s best defensive player and the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back; Oklahoma State’s Dan Bailey with the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker; and Florida’s Chas Henry with the Ray Guy Award, presented to the nation’s best punter. Auburn head coach Gene Chizik was also honored with The Home Depot Coach of the Year Award.

Returning American tennis star Andy Roddick is returning to the U.S. Davis Cup team in 2011 after skipping the event this year. In a statement released by the U.S. Tennis Association, Roddick calls winning the Davis Cup a “top priority.” The United States and new coach Jim Courier will play at Chile in the first round March 4-6.

Failed Leicester soccer manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said he failed in a bid to sign former England midfielder David Beckham from the Los Angeles Galaxy. Eriksson, whose team is in the bottom half of the English league’s second tier, said he spoke to Beckham’s agent to see if there was a chance.

Died Coaching great Murray “The Chief” Armstrong, the former NHL player who coached the University of Denver to five NCAA championships, has died. He was 94. The University of Denver said Armstrong died Wednesday in St. Augustine, Fla., following complications from a series of strokes.
