Fined Philadelphia defensive end Trent Cole has been fined $20,000 by the NFL for hitting Houston quarterback Matt Schaub in the knee area. Cardinals DT Alan Branch was docked $10,000 for roughing the passer for his hit on Rams rookie QB Sam Bradford. Lions DE Cliff Avril was fined $15,000 for roughing the passer. He struck Chicago’s Jay Cutler in the face area. Two Bills were fined: RB Quinton Ganther $5,000 for unnecessary roughness for hitting Vikings punter Chris Kluwe at the end of a return, and guard Andy Levitre $7,500 for striking an opponent late.

Arrested Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline pleaded not guilty to charges of disorderly conduct and alcohol intoxication after being arrested early Friday morning. Hartline and Ashley Carnes were arrested outside a residence following an argument with another woman, Samantha Sheeran.

Hospitalized Tennis great Martina Navratilova was hospitalized in Kenya because of fluid accumulation in her lungs after attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The 54-year-old is expected to recover. Navratilova was diagnosed with high-altitude pulmonary edema.

Injured University of Memphis men’s basketball forward Wesley Witherspoon, the team’s leading scorer, is expected to miss five weeks after having surgery for a torn cartilage in his right knee.

• Duke freshman Kyrie Irving has had his right foot placed in a hard cast. The star point guard remains out indefinitely for the top-ranked Blue Devils, who play host to Saint Louis today.

Cleared The Sacramento Kings say reigning rookie of the year Tyreke Evans will be able to play despite an inflamed arch on his left foot. The team said that an MRI the previous day showed that Evans’ plantar fascia is intact and he has no stress fracture.

Banned Olympic swimmer Ben Hockin has been banned for one year for failing to follow rules when switching his nationality from Britain to Paraguay. Swimming’s governing body says it backdated the suspension to take effect from May 23. The ruling allows Hockin to keep four medals he won at the South American Games in March. FINA has fined Paraguay’s federation $1,500 and the British body $500.
