Area roundup: Golden Bears oust Huskies

The Pac-10 co-champion California Golden Bears (29-3) beat the Washington Huskies (24-9) for the third straight time this season to advance to the Final Four of the NCAA volleyball tournament.

Cal won in straight sets in Seattle on Saturday – 25-21, 25-20, 25-14 – and joins USC to give the Pac-10 two teams in the semifinals.

Also advancing were three-time defending champ Penn State (30-5) and Texas (27-5).

Penn State knocked off Duke 3-1 in State College, Pa. The victory was an NCAA-record 94th straight at home for the Nittany Lions and a record 22 in a row in the tournament.

Southern Cal (29-4) upset Stanford in five sets in Dayton, Ohio, while the Longhorns beat Purdue 3-1 in Austin, Texas.

Former Mead Panthers star Alexis Olgard, a freshman at USC, gave the Trojans a 16-14 victory in the fifth set when she scored the final point by blocking a Cardinal kill attempt.

Wrestling

The North Idaho Cardinals used five pins to roll to a 42-10 win over the visiting Southwestern Oregon Lakers.

Brock Banta started the Cardinals off and running with a pin of Ryan Arand in 3 minutes, 53 seconds in the 133-pound weight class.

Branden Mowery (141) followed with a fall against Riley Omlid in 5:32.

NIC 157-pounder Jeremy Bommarito pinned Eli Garner in 2:05, while Wilhelm Meyer (165) took just 4 seconds longer to pin Daniel Pruett.

Justin Korthuis notched the final pin of the match for NIC, taking care of Jake Rice in 2:55 in the 184-pound class.
