Area basketball briefs: Piper-led Eagles cruise past Saints

Julie Piper knocked down 11 of 15 shots from the floor to finish with a game-high 23 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to guide the Eastern Washington Eagles to a 73-44 victory over the Saint Martin’s Saints on Saturday in Cheney.

Tatjana Sparavalo added 16 points and six rebounds for the Eagles (2-6), while Chene Cooper handed out 12 assists.

No player scored in double figures for the Saints (6-4).

EWU finished with a 43-28 rebound advantage.

Whitworth 80, La Verne 72: Emily Guthrie finished with a double-double – 19 points, 11 rebounds – to power the Pirates (4-4) to a victory over the Leopards (2-5) in La Verne, Calif.

Lauren Picha pitched in with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Pirates, who shot 45.5 percent from the floor.

La Verne, which connected on just 32 percent of its shots, was led by the 14 points of Ashley Paul.

Seattle 62, Idaho 43: The Vandals (6-3) turned the ball over 27 times and shot just 27 percent from the floor for the game in falling to the Redhawks (3-6) in Seattle.

Yinka Olorunnife had 14 points and eight rebounds to pace Idaho.

CC Spokane 70, Quest University 42: Korrie Bourn had game highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds and added four assists and a block to lead the Sasquatch (4-1) to a win over the visiting Kermodes (6-8).

Megan Tullis chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds for CCS, while Jessica Sosnowski added 10 points and nine boards.

Salt Lake 64, North Idaho 51: Jami Mokofisi and Haley Holmstead each scored 21 points to lead the Bruins (9-2, 1-0 Scenic West Athletic Conference) past the visiting Cardinals (10-2, 0-2).

Mokofisi reached 21 in a more efficient manner than her teammate, making 9 of 10 shots. Holmstead connected on 8 of 19 attempts.

Kama Griffitts came off the bench to score a team-high 11 points for NIC.

The Bruins buried 51.1 percent of their shots for the game, while holding the Cardinals to 30.8 percent shooting.


Paul Hafford hit five 3-pointers and had with a game-high 37 points as Northwest Elite took a 108-105 win over Community Colleges of Spokane at the Lane CC Invitational in Eugene, Ore.

Chaz Johnson and reserve Danny Marshall scored 32 apiece to pace the Sasquatch (5-4).

Salt Lake 73, North Idaho 59: Jason Gamblin came off the bench to pour in a game-high 24 points and grab 10 rebounds to lead the Bruins (11-2, 1-1 SWAC) to a win over the visiting Cardinals (13-2, 0-2).

NIC’s Michael Hale had 15 points and six rebounds.
