GSL roundup: Gonzaga Prep wears down Lewis and Clark

So much for being undersized.

The Gonzaga Prep girls basketball team’s tallest starter stands 5-foot-10. The Bullpups claim they field the shortest lineup in the Greater Spokane League.

In fact, the tallest of the 13 Bulldogs is 5-10.

By contrast, the Lewis and Clark Tigers field one of the tallest, if not the tallest, lineups in the league. Saturday afternoon, they found themselves in a reverse mismatch.

G-Prep’s guard-heavy lineup lapped the taller Tigers as the Bullpups administered a 77-57 drubbing at G-Prep.

Doing much of the damage for the Bullpups was 5-6 junior point guard Lindsay Stockton, who went off for a career-high 36 points.

Stockton seemingly toyed with the Tigers. She hit jump shots, drove the key, scrapped for loose balls and was in the right place at the right time most of the game. She made 15 of 23 shots from the field.

As far as Stockton was concerned, it was about time that she played well. In the Bullpups’ four previous games, she was plagued with foul trouble.

“I could pass it if I needed to and I could score if I needed to,” Stockton said. “It just helped having my entire team there making their shots. So it was easier for me.”

G-Prep (5-0 overall, 5-0 league) is the lone unbeaten team in the GSL. LC (4-1, 4-1) dropped into a tie for second with Shadle Park.

“Nice butt kickin’,” LC coach Jim Redmon said. “Complete hats off to them. They beat us in most (statistical) categories. Stockton had a phenomenal game. We never adjusted to their penetration.”

G-Prep coach Mike Arte said it was by far the Bullpups’ best game of the young season.

“I thought we executed extremely well offensively and were able to draw them away from the basket,” Arte said. “They’re so talented offensively. I thought we did a good job (defensively) for as small as we are and as scrappy as we are.”

The teams played essentially dead even for the first quarter. G-Prep began to assert control in the second period, taking a 38-30 lead into halftime.

Redmon called a timeout midway in the third quarter, imploring his team to buckle down on defense. Things went south from there, though, as G-Prep went on a 15-0 run to build a 58-38 lead with 1:24 to go in the period.

LC pulled within 13 points four times in the fourth, but couldn’t pull closer.

“We’ve worn teams down in the second half with our pressure and our quickness,” Arte said.

G-Prep senior Tia Presley had 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Junior wing Nakia Arquette led LC with 24 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

“We almost gave them 80 points and I don’t remember giving 80 points to any team since I’ve been at LC,” Redmon said. “We tried every defense we had in the book and none of them really worked well. A lot of the credit needs to go to Prep, because they made us look bad today.”

Arte had much to be pleased about.

“The thing I told them that I was most proud of is they played together as a team,” Arte said. “They passed the ball to each other, looked for the open person and they weren’t intimidated by the height.”

Shadle Park 44, North Central 35: Trailing 18-14 after the first half, the Highlanders (5-2, 4-1) outscored the Indians (3-3, 3-2) 16-5 in the decisive third quarter at NC.

Aleisa Hathaway led Shadle with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Riley Holsinger led NC with 17 points.

Mead 68, Ferris 62: Taylor Ingebritsen and Jade Redmon combined for 40 points as the visiting Panthers (3-3, 2-3) stopped the Saxons (0-5, 0-5).

Ingebritsen had a game-high 22 points and five assists while Redmon chipped in 18 points and 10 rebounds. Cassidy Phillips led Ferris with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Central Valley 65, Rogers 22: Sydney Emory had a game-high 21 points, coming on seven 3-pointers, as the Bears (2-4, 2-3) handled the visiting Pirates (0-5, 0-5).

Emory tied a school record set by Joy Rowe against East Valley in 2003.

Jasmin Andrews led Rogers with 10 points.
