In brief: Ill.-Chicago knocks off No. 12 Illinois

College basketball: Darrin Williams scored five points in the final 1:10 Saturday and Illinois-Chicago rallied from an eight-point second-half deficit to stun No. 12 Illinois 57-54 in Chicago, ending the Illini’s seven-game winning streak.

After a sluggish start, Illinois (10-2) used a 12-0 run to build a 49-41 lead with 7:30 to go and appeared in control.

But the Flames (5-7), who led for a good portion of the game, weren’t about to go away in the United Center.

Illinois had won 12 of the 13 previous meetings with the Flames.

• Kansas edges USC: Josh Selby made his long-awaited collegiate debut one to remember with a go-ahead 3-pointer with 26 seconds left, leading No. 3 Kansas (10-0) to a 70-68 win over Southern Cal (6-5) in Lawrence, Kan.

Selby, a freshman point guard ordered by the NCAA to sit out the first nine games, had a team-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers.

• UCLA tops No. 16 BYU: Reeves Nelson scored a career-high 23 points and UCLA (6-4) posted an 86-79 win over No. 16 BYU (10-1) in the John R. Wooden Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

Jimmer Fredette led BYU with 25 points.

• Florida upsets Kansas State: Kenny Boynton scored 15 points and Florida (8-2) held No. 6 Kansas State (9-2) to 27 percent shooting for a 57-44 victory in the one-day Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise, Fla.

The Wildcats’ point total was their lowest in Frank Martin’s five seasons as coach.

• Texas holds off North Carolina: Freshman Cory Joseph hit a turnaround jumper over Dexter Strickland with 1.4 seconds left to lift No. 22 Texas (9-2) to a 78-76 win over North Carolina (7-4) in Greensboro, N.C.

• Yale women stun Florida State: Megan Vasquez had 25 points and freshman Jenna Graf added 22 to lead Yale (2-7) to a 91-85 win over No. 15 Florida State (10-2) in New Haven, Conn.

Cavs beat Knicks, end 10-game losing streak

NBA: Mo Williams scored 23 points, including the tying basket late in regulation and six points in overtime, and the Cleveland Cavaliers snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 109-102 victory over the New York Knicks in Cleveland.

Amare Stoudemire and Raymond Felton each scored 23 points for the Knicks, who have lost three straight after winning 13 of 14.

• Heat post 12th straight win: LeBron James scored 32 points and he and Chris Bosh got away with contact on Kirk Hinrich on a potential game-winning layup, letting the visiting Miami Heat escape with a 95-94 win over the last-place Washington Wizards, who nearly pulled off the upset without injured John Wall and just-traded Gilbert Arenas.

The Heat’s winning streak now stands at 12. The Wizards have lost seven straight.

• Clippers stun Bulls: Blake Griffin scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his 15th straight double-double as the Los Angeles Clippers beat Chicago 100-99 in Chicago, stopping the Bulls’ seven-game winning streak.

• Spurs roll on: Tony Parker scored 16 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, leading the San Antonio Spurs to their eighth straight victory, 112-106 over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies.

Trail Blazers beat Warriors: LaMarcus Aldridge had 17 points and 12 rebounds and short-handed Portland beat the visiting Golden State Warriors 96-95.

Bruins hand Caps eighth straight defeat

NHL: Andrew Ference scored his first goal in 100 games to help the Boston Bruins beat Washington 3-2 in Boston and send the Capitals to their eighth straight loss.

Tim Thomas made 39 saves for the Bruins, including a stop on Alex Ovechkin with 11 seconds left.

• Staal sparks Hurricanes: Eric Staal scored three goals for the Carolina Hurricanes, who held on to beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-2 in Raleigh, N.C., and extend their season-best winning streak to four.

It was Staal’s 12th career hat trick.

• Flyers remain hot: Nikolay Zherdev scored two goals and Brian Boucher stopped 24 shots to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-1 win over the visiting New York Rangers.

The Flyers have won five straight and seven of eight. They have 49 points, best in the NHL.

Friedgen apparently out at Maryland

Miscellany: A person familiar with the situation says Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen has been told he won’t be back next season, although “nothing is set in stone.”

Athletic director Kevin Anderson is asking the 63-year-old coach to retire or accept a buyout, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the talks are still ongoing.

• Hopkins, Pascal fight to draw: Bernard Hopkins missed a chance to become the oldest boxer to hold a major world title, fighting to a technical draw with Canadian Jean Pascal in Quebec City.

Hopkins, 45, rallied after being knocked down in the first and third rounds.

The draw allows Pascal to keep his WBC and IBO light heavyweight titles.

• Zurbriggen wins downhill: Silvan Zurbriggen of Switzerland won a men’s World Cup downhill in Val Gardena, Italy, to take the lead in the overall standings.

• Inter Milan wins Club World Cup: European champion Inter Milan won the Club World Cup of soccer in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, defeating African champ TP Mazembe 3-0.
