Shelter resource snubbed

I was so disappointed when reading about the family given a dog after fire destroyed their home (“A helping hand and a puppy,” Spokesman Review, Dec. 17). Our local animal shelters are overflowing with beautiful dogs just waiting for a home. Most will die homeless.

This would’ve been such a great opportunity for them, to not only make a family happy, but also save the life of a dog, who also needed a “family.”

Buying a bred dog from a pet store, who more than likely came from a puppy mill, not only perpetuates the myth “you cannot get a quality dog at the shelter,” it also helps keep these breeder mills in business.

The Salvation Army, who deals with homeless individuals in our area on a daily basis, should understand, better than anyone else, why it’s so very important to give a sweet, beautiful dog, sitting alone on a cold, cement, shelter floor, a home to call his own, saving his life in the process. It’s too bad that they missed this great opportunity, to save the life of a dog AND make a family happy, at the same time.
