In brief: Mavs stop Heat win streak at 12

NBA: Dirk Nowitzki scored 26 points, Jason Terry hit two big 3-pointers in the final 2 1/2 minutes, and the Dallas Mavericks ended Miami’s 12-game winning streak by beating the Heat 98-96 on Monday night in Dallas.

Terry finished with 19 and Caron Butler scored 13 for Dallas.

Dwyane Wade scored 22 points, while LeBron James and Chris Bosh each scored 19 for Miami.

• Jazz thump Cavs; Sloan ties for 3rd in wins: CJ Miles scored 22 points, Paul Millsap and Raja Bell added 19 apiece and the Utah Jazz beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-90, moving coach Jerry Sloan into a tie with Pat Riley for the third-most wins in NBA history with 1,210 victories.

Deron Williams had 17 points and 10 assists as the Jazz improved to 11-1 against the Eastern Conference.

• Horford, Hawks beat new-look Magic: Al Horford scored 24 points and the Atlanta Hawks rolled to a 91-81 victory over Dwight Howard and the reconstructed Orlando Magic.

Howard had 19 points and 20 rebounds, but too little help. Jameer Nelson scored 18 points but Gilbert Arenas made only 2 of 11 shots for 10 points.

• Bucks PG Jennings out 4-6 weeks: Milwaukee Bucks point guard Brandon Jennings will miss four to six weeks as he recovers from surgery to repair a fracture in his left foot.

General manager John Hammond said the 21-year-old Jennings was examined after Saturday’s 95-86 loss to Utah.

Jennings broke the long bone on the outside of his left foot that connects to the little toe, one of the most common bones to break in the foot.

Coach K tied for 2nd most wins all-time

College Basketball: Kyle Singler scored 24 points to help No. 1 Duke beat Elon 98-72, moving coach Mike Krzyzewski into a tie for second place on the all-time wins list.

Nolan Smith added 22 points as the Blue Devils (11-0) gave their Hall of Fame coach his 879th win. Krzyzewski is now tied with Dean Smith as the winningest coach in Division I history.

Krzyzewski can pass Smith by beating North Carolina-Greensboro Dec. 29. That would leave only Bobby Knight ahead of him with 902 wins.

• Jacksonville upsets No. 20 Florida: Freshman Keith McDougald scored a career-high 18 points, including four free throws late in overtime, and Delwan Graham added two critical baskets to lead Jacksonville to a 71-68 upset of No. 20 Florida.

McDougald hit both ends of a one-and-one with 31.8 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Dolphins (7-3) a 69-66 lead and hit two more with 17.1 seconds remaining.

Florida (8-3) got a season-high 21 points from Erving Walker.

Malkin, Crosby lead Pens past Coyotes

NHL: Evgeni Malkin tied a career high with five points, Sidney Crosby extended his scoring streak to 21 games with a goal and two assists and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Phoenix Coyotes 6-1.

Malkin had two goals and three assists – all within the first 27:21 of the game.

• Vokoun makes 26 saves as Panthers stop Flyers: Tomas Vokoun had 26 saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season and lead the Florida Panthers to an easy 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Bill Thomas, Shawn Matthias, Mike Santorelli and Dmitry Kulikov also scored for the Panthers.

• Islanders LW Martin suspended: New York Islanders left wing Matt Martin has been suspended by the NHL for two games for a blind-side check to the head of Phoenix forward Vernon Fiddler.

Martin can return to the lineup Sunday when the Islanders host Montreal.

Kent St. hires Ohio St. assistant Hazell

Miscellany: Darrell Hazell made some history at Kent State just by being hired, becoming the school’s first black head football coach.

Hazell becomes Kent State’s 20th football coach. He replaces Doug Martin, who resigned last month with one game remaining in a 5-7 season. Martin went 29-53 in seven years overall.

• Beckham not going on loan during offseason: The Los Angeles Galaxy says David Beckham is expected back at the team next month rather than going on loan to another club during the Major League Soccer offseason.

The 35-year-old midfielder said after an awards’ ceremony that he hoped to play in Europe during the winter to boost his chances of being recalled to England’s national team.

• RI top contender to host America’s Cup: Newport is a top contender to host the next America’s Cup in 2013 but must ensure that it can complete renovations on the fort that would serve as a village-type environment for the competitors, organizers announced.

Tom Ehman, a board member of the Golden Gate Yacht Club, attended a meeting of the state’s Economic Development Corporation, where he said organizers were serious about working with Newport on their proposal. But he stressed that no final decision had been made.
