Three arrested in assault, stabbing

A group of would-be robbers apparently messed with the wrong man.
Spokane police were called to the area of North Regal Street and East Wabash Avenue about 3 p.m. Thursday for the report of a stabbing.
The victim, described as an older man, was walking home on Market Street when a group of younger males walked toward him. He crossed the street to avoid them, police said. The men followed him across the street, demanded money, and started beating him when he said he had none.

A group of would-be robbers apparently messed with the wrong man.

Spokane police were called to the area of North Regal Street and East Wabash Avenue about 3 p.m. Thursday for the report of a stabbing.

The victim, described as an older man, was walking home on Market Street when a group of younger males walked toward him. He crossed the street to avoid them, police said. The men followed him across the street, demanded money, and started beating him when he said he had none.

The victim was on the ground being severely beaten when he retrieved a knife to defend himself, police said.

He stabbed Devron Parrish, 23, in the abdomen. Patrick McKenzie, 25, was cut on the leg and required stitches. Both were taken to a local hospital. Police said Parrish’s wounds required surgery. The victim may have suffered facial fractures and a laceration on his left hand.

McKenzie was booked into Spokane County Jail. A 16-year-old also was booked into juvenile detention, police said, and there is an additional 16-year-old suspect who has not been arrested.
