Credit union ranks as state’s third largest
Tom Johnson becomes president and chief executive officer of Spokane Teachers Credit Union on Saturday.
He succeeds Steve Dahlstrom, who has been with STCU for 30 years, the last 20 as its chief executive.
Johnson is a former vice president of Whitworth University. He joined the credit union’s board of directors in 1994.
In 2006, he became STCU’s vice president for administration. He was promoted to executive vice president in May as the credit union implemented its succession plan.
He will be the fourth man to lead STCU since its founding in 1934.
Under Dahlstrom, STCU built its assets to $1.4 billion, making it Washington’s third-largest credit union and the nation’s 98th largest out of 7,800. The credit union has 11 branches in Washington and three in Idaho.
“STCU will continue to innovate, while never losing sight of the importance of one-on-one relationships,” Johnson said. “It is our focus on members, the engagement of our staff and our passion for service that gets us up every morning.”
A certified public accountant, Johnson was appointed in 2008 to the Washington Higher Education Facilities Authority by Gov. Chris Gregoire. The board assists private colleges with the sale of tax-exempt bonds to finance construction.
He has also served on the Spokane Public Schools Diversity Advisory Committee.
