Basketball roundup: Ferris wins, grabs top spot in GSL

Chase Haack tallied 14 points, eight rebounds and four blocks Wednesday and host Ferris (5-1, 5-0) jumped out to a 16-point first-half lead and held on to beat Gonzaga Prep (6-2, 5-1) 65-56, taking control of first place in the Greater Spokane League.

The Saxons, who finished with five players in double figures, led by 12 after one quarter and took an eight-point advantage into halftime.

Gonzaga Prep, which falls into a tie for second place with University, was led by Chris Sarbaugh’s 14 points.

University 58, Mt. Spokane 44: Brett Bailey scored a game-high 20 points, hitting both of his 3-point attempts and the Titans (6-1, 5-1) remained a game behind Ferris with their win over the host Wildcats (1-5, 0-5).

Kellen Clute had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, who are still searching for their first GSL victory.

Holiday Inn tourney

Lake City 78, Priest River 63: Brady Smith and Mark Smyly each led with 15 points, Colton Carlson and Chris Wheelock added 13 points apiece and the Timberwolves (7-2) took an eight-point halftime lead and held off the Spartans (6-2) at the North Idaho College Holiday tournament in Coeur d’Alene.

Max Salesky led the Spartans with 20 points and Eric Holbrook added 17 points as PR hit 12 3-pointers. LC plays Chiawana at 4 p.m. today and PR plays Post Falls at 2:30 p.m.

Coeur d’Alene 78, Chiawana 73: Deon Watson scored 17 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter as the Vikings (5-3) erased a nine-point deficit in the third quarter en route to a victory over the Riverhawks (4-2).

Chad Chalich added 18 points and Devon Loy had 12 for the Vikings, who play Lake Stevens today at 5:30 p.m.

Post Falls 74, Lake Stevens 44: Luke Thoreson had 15 points, Matt Lickford added 12 and the Trojans (8-0) had four players finish in double figures to beat the Vikings (4-6). The Trojans scored at least 20 points in the first three quarters, taking a 27-point lead with one quarter remaining.

SunDome Shootout

Colville 65, La Salle 29: Matt Hubbard tallied 12 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks and Alex Pond added 15 points with seven boards as the Indians (4-3) beat the Lightning (1-6) in Yakima.

Colfax 52, Connell 35: Brandon Gfeller had a game-high 20 points, Kyle Johnson added 12 and the Bulldogs (4-1) downed the Eagles (1-2). After leading by three at the end of the half, the Bulldogs opened things up in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 26-12 after the break.

Ridgefield 53, Riverside 40: Sam Landerholm and Michael Potter had 19 and 14 points, respectively, and the Spudders (5-3) outscored the Rams (3-5) 17-6 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

Freeman tournament

St. Maries 58, West Valley 55: Jake Mercer scored 15 points to go with eight rebounds and was named tournament MVP as the Lumberjacks (7-2) knocked off the Eagles (6-1) in the title game.

WV’s Brady Bagby was held to just four points in the loss, as the Eagles were led by Jake Love’s 21 points.

Freeman 53, Lakeland 47: Colin Ayers finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and Cody Unfred added 11 points as the Scotties (4-6) held off the Hawks (1-8) in the consolation game. Aaron Spencer and Hunter Arno combined to lead the Hawks with 21 points.

Wenatchee tourney

Cheney 67, Eisenhower 62 (2OT): Parker Franklin tallied 18 points and four rebounds to lead the Blackhawks to a win over the Cadets (1-6) in double overtime. Franklin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to a second overtime in which the Blackhawks scored seven of the nine points in the period.

Whitman Classic

Valley Christian 54, Odessa-Harrington 47: Tyler Tipke scored 16 points to lead all scorers and Craver Small tossed in six of his 11 points to start the third quarter as the Panthers (6-2) held off the Titans (2-7) to advance to the third-place game in Walla Walla.

Timberlake tournament

Timberlake 76, Orofino 42: Brian Cronnelly scored 20 of his 23 points in the fist half and the Tigers (1-9) outscored the Maniacs 68-33 in the first three quarters to earn their first victory of the season, in Spirit Lake.

Reardan tournament

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 61, Chewelah 46: Derek Isaak hit five 3-pointers and finished with 30 points to go with six assists and the Warriors (8-0) dumped the Cougars (4-5) in their opening-round game. Thunder Wellhausen added 14 points and nine boards for ACH.

Reardan 62, Wellpinit 56: Roy Walser and Jake Hight each scored a team-high 14 points as four Indians (5-3) finished in double figures to beat the Redskins (6-3) in Reardan. After trailing by 14 at halftime, the Indians outscored Wellpinit 46-26 in the second half to pull out the win. Reardan plays ACH in the title game today.

Chelan tournament

Lake Roosevelt 47, Chelan 45: Ty Egbert tallied a team-high 14 points and dunked home the game-winning bucket with 10 seconds remaining to lift the Raiders (5-2) to a win over the Goats (3-4) in Chelan. Keith Rosenbaum added 11 points for the Raiders.

Kellogg tournament

Coeur d’Alene Charter 63, Wallace 49: Tyrell Peters tallied a game-high 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers as the Panthers (8-2) knocked off the Miners (2-5) in the consolation game of the Silver Valley Classic. Greg Roman added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Panthers.

Nonleague

Richland 71, Central Valley 64: Bob Imhoff scored 14 points to lead four Bombers (6-2) in double figures in their win over the Bears (4-4) at CV. Tyler Chamberlain scored a game-high 20 points to go with nine rebounds, but the Bears couldn’t overcome a seven-point first quarter.
