Kids’ calendar art features recycling tips

The Spokane Regional Solid Waste System has published a 2011 recycling calendar illustrated by Spokane schoolchildren.

It’s available for free at the Regional Solid Waste System office, located downtown in the Old City Hall on Wall Street.

The theme for the calendar art is “Recycling: It’s the right thing to do!” and 240 students from 14 Spokane County schools entered their drawings into the contest.

America Recycles Day is Nov. 15, and at the Nov. 16 meeting of the Spokane County commissioners 31 students were recognized as finalists in the contest. From that group 18 posters were selected for the calendar, and all of them were exhibited at River Park Square.

The calendar contains all sorts of recycling information, phone numbers and addresses for transfer stations and recycling centers, as well as updated lists of what can be recycled in the curbside blue bins.

The calendar is sponsored by the Regional Solid Waste System, and partial grant funding from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
